An infrared (IR) sensor in an elevator (lift) system functions as a safety light curtain or photo-eye that projects invisible light beams across the doorway. If a person or object interrupts the beam while the doors are closing, the sensor immediately signals the lift controller to stop and reopen the doors, preventing entrapment or injury.
